Hey Carson. Calf raises do help, especially if you have weak calves. With that being said, they don't contribute as much as the other muscles (quads, hamstrings, glutes, etc) to help you jump higher.

Hi Dan,

I'm 36 years old (37 in August). I'm 6'1 (7'10 reach). When I was 21-22 I could jump from 2 feet inside the free throw line and dunk, post up and dunk off of a drop step, etc. I never even used momentum to dunk and slouched when I jumped lol, Im just now finding out that I wasn't even jumping right. When I was 33 years old, I dropped some weight and was able to dunk again but I had only gotton down to 230 pounds when my ideal weight is 195 to be at my best. I am now 245 pounds and 36 years old. I'n your opinion, given what I mentioned above, if I were to drop down to 200 pounds, and use the right techniques for jumping (momentum etc) like the dunkers today do, do you think I'd still be able to get a vertical in the 40s? I can grab rim bearly right now at 245 pounds lol although it hurts my knees after a few jumps cause of the weight. Anxious to hear your reply. I know 36 is getting a little old. :-(

Hey, Dan
I'm 14, and have a 30in running vert. I can nearly grab the rim. (i can touch it) Do you think you could possibly hook me up with some vert jump exercises, so i could possibly dunk in the coming year or two?

thanks so much

Hey Shane. There's no "right age" to start lifting weights because everybody is different. Check this out to get a better understanding http://www.sptimes.com/2006/02/24/Brandontimes/When_should_a_kid_sta.shtml

i see that you are sending some of these guys some exercises, for a high vertical jump. I didnt make the basketball team my freshman year, and i got very disapointed, so i said that i would give it two years, to work on it. I am now great with the ball, and i am a sophmore now.
next year i really hope to make the team, and noone at school can dunk, and i would love to dunk.
If there is any way possible to send me some workouts, it would be great, thanks so much..:):)

Dan, great stuff! I'm 35, and I could dunk pretty well in college, but since then I've broken a leg and really gotten away from the training that made me successful. I just picked up Jump Manual, and I'm really excited about the process. I hate wasting time doing exercises that won't bring me closer to my goals. So when I see that a lot of top 7 are in that program, I feel even more determined to reach my goals. Thanks for the great info; I look forward to sharing my success with you.

Hey Dan, how many repititons and sets of sqauts, pull ups, squats etc. should I do and also, what days should I rest so I don't lead to overtraining. I REALLY want to increase my vertical.

Thanks

I made my own workout. It's just plyometric exercises which are: lunges, squats, jumping squats, step ups, side-to-side hops, calf raises, jumps on the spot, and rim reach jumps. In the first couple of weeks I had decent gains, but after that I have very low gains. I need some advice please.

Thanks

P.S im not willing to pay for a vertical leap program

Hey. I made my own vertical leap workout which includes: lungees, squats, jumping squats, step ups, side-to-side hops, calf raises, jumps on the spot, and rim reach jumps. Before I started this workout I had no vertical leap workout history. For the first couple of weeks I had some good gains. But now I am having tiny gains every week. I need advice quickly please.

Thanks

Wsup Dub. I agree that box explosions and hang cleans are great vertical jump exercises. However, they didn't make our top 7 list because they don't produce as much "bang-for-the-buck" results as the others on the list.

why aren't box explosions part of your list i've always found those to help me and also why aren't power cleans or hang cleans part of the workout....wouldn't you wanna do quick explosive workouts to increase your vertical since jumping is a quick and explosive movement...I've always known squats and deadlifts to be exercises for power not so much the quick muscles that mainly help you jump...I'm only a high school student and i don't have a degree or anything but i know a little bit about this just because I'm interested in it so if you'd explain your theory more for me please because i like to know as much as possible about all of it

Thanks
